Team principal Ross Brawn has defended Honda team colleague Nick Fry amid suggestions the CEO worked to topple the satellite outfit Super Aguri.

Aguri Suzuki, and failed team saviour Franz Josef Weigl commented this week that Fry, who appointed Brawn as his successor as Honda team principal for this year and beyond, was instrumental in Super Aguri's collapse.

"I am sure it is a very difficult time for Aguri. He has worked for two years on this project and he realised the end had come, and when he reflects on some of the things he said I am sure he will reflect differently," Brawn told a news conference in Istanbul on Friday.

Also on the scene of Sunday's Turkish grand prix, Fry himself insisted that he cannot be held responsible for Super Aguri's problems, despite rumours that he instructed Bernie Ecclestone to refuse the team access to the paddock this weekend.

Fry had also been openly dismissive of the proposed Weigl buyout, after earlier assisting his friend Martin Leach's ultimately failed Magma deal.

Brawn, insisting that the Magma deal was the only "viable solution", said: "What I saw was Nick making big efforts to keep the project alive."
</story>

		<date>Friday 09th May 2008</date>
		<story>

  Formula one has reached a new computer game licensing deal, with the British company Codemasters, gaming websites reported on Friday.

The news follows reports earlier this week that said Bernie Ecclestone was at odds with F1's previous game developer, Sony Computer Entertainment, who last produced an official title for the Playstation in 2006.

The gaming websites on Friday said Codemasters has already begun development of its first official F1 game, which will be available on multiple gaming platforms in 2009.

"This alliance with formula one is the jewel in Codemasters' racing crown," CEO Rod Cousens is quoted as saying.
</story>

The Finn managed only three laps in his F2008, but word from the pitlane is that the broken unit will be repaired rather than replaced ahead of the afternoon session at 2pm.

Raikkonen's troubles were in stark contrast to the fortunes of his teammate, Felipe Massa, who topped the time sheets, despite a few spins.
Morning practice got off to a quiet start at Istanbul Park on Friday.

The 'Otodrom' venue was declared wet by race control just prior to the green light at 10am, after circuit workers left the racing line between turns 3 and 9 damp following a late spate of cleaning activities.

For almost the entire opening hour of the 90 minute session, most runners opted simply for a one-lap installation before returning to the pits to wait for the circuit to dry.

Toro Rosso driver Sebastian Vettel said the track was "particularly slippery" through the awesome turn 8 left-handers, and once the action got underway deep into the session, a few drivers - including Jarno Trulli, Giancarlo Fisichella, Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa - had spins.

Meanwhile, race stewards are likely to look dimly upon Force India driver Fisichella's apparent running of the red light at the very beginning of the session.
</story>

		<headline>Renault must confirm Barca pace - Alonso</headline>

    Fernando Alonso in Istanbul insisted that Renault's objective for the Turkish grand prix is to "confirm the improvement" to the R28 as shown at the last race.

After a disappointing start to the 2008 season, the former double world champion only narrowly missed taking pole position - albeit with the help of a light fuel load - at his home Spanish grand prix, before retiring with engine failure.

"It is important to confirm here what we saw at Barcelona," Alonso, 26, is quoted as saying by the Spanish news agency EFE in Turkey.

"We are not yet at the level of the top teams, but the goal is to get as close as possible to McLaren and BMW," he added.

"We need to know that we did not just go well on one circuit. So to confirm what we saw in Barcelona is our goal, because the next little step can put us up with the best teams," Alonso said.

He revealed that the next significant step for the R28 will appear on the car in the next "five or six" races.

Meanwhile, Alonso took an early bath from the F1 drivers' football team match on Wednesday to return to his Istanbul hotel to watch Real Madrid play Barcelona on TV.

For the record, Real Madrid secured an emphatic 4-1 win.
</story>

		<headline>New SC rule could be in place for Monaco</headline>

    A proposal to change the safety car rules could be in place in time for the Monaco grand prix in two weeks.

BMW motor sport director Mario Theissen in Istanbul admitted that his preferred solution would be to electronically limit the speed of cars upon deployment of the safety car, to prevent drivers from racing at high speed into the pits.

"This is not going to happen within the next few races," Theissen said.

The current rule, where the pitlane is simply closed after the deployment of the SC, is being criticised for unfairly punishing drivers who are out of fuel.

For now, FIA race director Charlie Whiting has proposed to simply impose a minimum time for caution sectors; a solution similar to the speed restrictions already in place for the formation laps prior to a grand prix, and the closing stages of 'Q3'.

"Charlie's proposal I think could be implemented immediately," Theissen explained. "That would be better than the present situation."

The German said the hoped the new rule will be in place in Monaco.

"Yes, because there, the risk of a safety car is the highest," he said.

The issue was due to be discussed in the team managers' meeting here at Istanbul.
</story>

		<headline>Ferrari found loophole in engine freeze?</headline>
		<date>Friday 09th May 2008</date>
		<story>

    According to whispers in the Istanbul paddock, Ferrari may have found a way to creep ahead in the horse power department this season despite the current 'freeze' on engine development.

It is common knowledge that, not only are the Maranello based team's drivers getting the best starts off the grid, the V8 power plant in the back of the F2008 is now perhaps the most powerful in the entire field.

Last year, however, the engine situation between teams seemed closer, leading to suggestions that Ferrari's permitted tweaks for 2008 have added tangible performance to the unit.

The German magazine Auto Motor und Sport estimates Ferrari's horse power gain compared to last year at "within the two-digit range".

Most engine manufacturers made permitted tweaks to their V8 designs over the winter, but it is rumoured that some rival teams are unhappy that Ferrari's changes - apparently green-lighted by the FIA - seem to have resulted in a significant performance gain.

Auto Motor und Sport said Ferrari's rivals are concerned that the Italian team's 2008 changes were submitted "under the pretext of reliability problems".

"The (engine freeze) rules do not allow any great leaps. So whether a development has taken place to increase performance, I can not judge," BMW motor sport director Mario Theissen said at Istanbul Park.

"But I assume the normal procedures have taken place. I have no suspicions," he added.
</story>

    Bernie Ecclestone in Turkey tried to put a positive spin on the Super Aguri collapse, as his formula one grid dwindles to just ten teams.

"More room," he answered.

"It means we have a lot more room now because the teams are expanding like crazy with their hospitality units and their trucks and everything. We're always running out of room," the F1 chief executive is quoted as saying by PA Sport.

The prescribed maximum for F1 is twelve teams.

"We're not looking for twelve teams, we're looking for ten," he said.

Ecclestone, 77, had been touted as a potential saviour of the Leafield based outfit, and its administrators this week expressed confidence that the outfit might be sold as a going concern.

But, presumably given the team's reportedly $100m debt to Honda, the Briton said he baulked at the price tag.

"I didn't want to put in 100 million, which is what was needed," Ecclestone said.

"For somebody else it might have been okay, but it wasn't for me."

Ecclestone is not confident that the administrators will find a buyer.

"There are a lot of people walking around with a begging bowl," he acknowledged.
</story>

As reported, the McLaren driver was making a guest appearance at 'Troya'; an historical theatre show by a local folkdance troupe, before moving on to Istanbul to prepare for this weekend's grand prix.

But rather than donning the historic garb of Troya's actors, the 23-year-old was decked out in his sponsor-laden formula one overalls and swung around the stage attached to a wire.

British newspaper The Times' F1 correspondent Ed Gorman watched Hamilton's antics and described it as "an extremely odd occasion".

    Felipe Massa has set his sights on winning a third consecutive Turkish grand prix at the Istanbul Park venue this weekend.

On both of his previous visits to the Otodrom as a Ferrari driver, the Brazilian set pole and won; in 2006, the triumph was his first grand prix victory, in front of his legendary then teammate Michael Schumacher.

"It is a very special circuit for me, so what I say is, 'there is no two without three'.

"There is no need to hide my plans for the weekend. I want to achieve a trio of victories in Turkey," the 26-year-old added.

Massa says he followed his teammate Kimi Raikkonen home for second place at Barcelona two weeks ago after qualifying just third.

"I could then not win on a circuit that is very difficult to overtake on," he is quoted as saying by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Right now, the competition with Kimi is strong and my second place was still a good result. On Sunday, however, I will try to win."

Massa currently lies fourth in the drivers' classification, eleven points behind championship leader Raikkonen.

He played down the disadvantage of having to use a race-old V8 engine at Istanbul, and a gearbox that has now contested a full three - of a mandatory four - races.

"It should not be a problem, given that the regulations allow some of the components to be looked at anyway when necessary," Massa said.
</story>

"I have no idea whether I will or not," the 37-year-old is quoted as saying by the news agency EP.

Regular driver Kovalainen spent the night in a Barcelona hospital with concussion following his huge crash during the Spanish grand prix two weeks ago.

Whether or not de la Rosa, a Spaniard who is ironically from the Catalan region, will need to step up to the race cockpit in Istanbul will be determined after Kovalainen's mandatory FIA medical exam at the Otodrom venue today.

De la Rosa said: "The important thing is that Heikki recovers one hundred per cent as soon as possible.

"I have not really changed anything about my preparation, because there is always the possibility that I will race.

"The only different thing is that I have strengthened the left side of my neck more than usual, because that is particularly important at this circuit," he added.

Mercedes-Benz competition boss Norbert Haug, meanwhile, explained that de la Rosa was put on standby to replace Kovalainen because he is "the most experienced" of McLaren's backup drivers, including the Briton Gary Paffett.

The German added that Kovalainen, 26, has been feeling better "with every passing day" since he resumed training in Finland last week.
</story>
